| 6/18/08 - Airspan Networks Inc. (NASDAQ: AIRN), a leading provider of WiMAX-based broadband wireless access networks, received the WiMAX Forum Certified seal of approval for the company's MiMAX Q-Series USB Mobile WiMAX subscriber terminal. The WiMAX Forum announced the first recipients of this significant industry milestone at a press conference at the WIMAX Forum Global Congress in Amsterdam.
Certification of Mobile WiMAX products and solutions fulfils a critical step in Airspan's strategy to capitalize on the company's industry-leading footprint of fixed-WiMAX-compliant software-upgradeable commercial networks. Declan Byrne, Chief Marketing Officer at Airspan, stated, "Our current customer base is closely watching our progress in Mobile WiMAX. Getting out there with these advanced capabilities assures our current customers that they can continue growing their 802.16d-2004 networks with an upgrade path on their schedule, or start deploying 802.16e-2005 networks from Airspan now. New customers, who might have been waiting for the 2.5 GHz MIMO feature set, can be assured that Airspan is their choice to provide these cutting-edge technologies. Our strategy has always been to provide customers with maximum flexibility and performance, and the certification today shows that there isn't a trade-off in time-to-market."
"Conversations with our customers drove our decision to bypass the first certification round for Mobile WiMAX so that we could focus on the added capabilities of the latest 2.5-GHz profile," commented Paul Senior, CTO of Airspan and WiMAX Forum Board Member. "It's a real testament to our development team and our partners that we have accomplished our goal to be certified in the first round of 2.5 GHz certification."
"The WiMAX Forum would like to thank Airspan Networks and the other member companies that have worked so hard to achieve today's milestone and enabling the Forum to continue to reach critical objectives with the ongoing certification of Mobile WiMAX equipment," said Ron Resnick, president of the WiMAX Forum, during a press conference at the WiMAX Forum Global Congress in Amsterdam. "Airspan has played an important role in WiMAX Forum's success of driving market momentum by enabling us to move closer to delivering on our plan to certify more than 100 Mobile WiMAX products in 2008. Our six independent WiMAX Forum certification labs are on now online to manage the anticipated increase of products to be submitted for certification."
The MiMAX Q-Series USB from Airspan is a quad-band MIMO USB dongle for laptops and personal computers. Now certified by the WiMAX Forum for the 2.5-GHz band, MiMAX also operates in nearly every applicable WiMAX frequency from 2-GHz and up to 5-GHz frequencies. Certification includes thorough assessment of the features required in the WiMAX Forum 2.5 GHz profile as well as rigorous testing of multi-vendor interoperability.
